Trade Wars: How They Caused To USA a $428 Million Loss (and Other News)

February 28, 2026 in Weekly News Recap

In the last week I read many interesting news, and I choose the followings for you.

Women more likely to choose wine from female winemakers: How does a gender-based marketing affect consumer behavior in the wine industry? According to this study by Washington State University, female consumers, who make the majority of wine purchases in the U.S. (59%), show a higher intention to buy and even a willingness to pay more for wines that utilize "woman-made" labels and feminine visual cues.

The Global Glyphosate Study is a comprehensive toxicological report involving institutions from Europe and the U.S. The research provides evidence that low doses of glyphosate, even at levels currently deemed safe by regulators, can cause multiple types of cancer, including leukemia and liver tumors, in experimental animals. Surprisingly (but maybe not so much), the scientist Daniele Mandrioli, director of the Ramazzini Institute’s cancer research centre, has been fired after he led the Global Glyphosate Study that found glyphosate and its formulations are carcinogenic.

Wine Exports Plummeted by $428 Million in 2025: The American wine industry is facing a significant economic downturn: 33.5% drop in exports in 2025. The decline was largely driven by a massive - 76.8% in sales to Canada, attributed to trade tensions, tariffs, and a "buy local" movement among Canadian consumers.

Can a Simple Spray Protect Grapes from Wildfire Smoke? UC Davis and USDA has conducted a joint research conducted into the use of a calcium spray as a protective measure for grapevines exposed to wildfire smoke. By applying the spray during the ripening stage, researchers aim to thicken grape skin cell walls to decrease the absorption of smoke, thereby preventing the "smoke taint" that results in unfavorable ashy flavors in wine. Wildfires are a recurring plague in California, so the researchers are studying all the ways and tools they can to help wine producers and grape growers protect their vineyards.

Pinot Grigio DOC Delle Venezie is the Official Wine of Vinitaly & The City 2026, the fringe event of Italy's most eagerly awaited wine fair. Vinitaly & the City, addressed to consumers and winelovers every year turns the historic center of Verona into a major international showcase. This collaboration marks a key step in the Consortium's strategy, with a cultural and promotional presence that can bring together reputation, territory, and the general public, just as Vinitaly turns the world's spotlight on Italian wine. The iconic white wine from the Northeast will therefore be used for the inaugural toast of the event, scheduled for April 10, 2026, and will be the star attraction until April 12 at the Loggia di Fra Giocondo and in Piazza dei Signori, in the heart of Verona.
